Karen Malan is an attorney, accredited family and divorce mediator, RAF and personal injury mediator, and dispute resolution strategist, serving as Director at Malan Vermeulen Incorporated (MV Inc) and Managing Director of Alternative Conflict Resolution (Pty) Ltd. With over two decades of legal and business experience, Karen operates at the forefront of alternative dispute resolution in South Africa, with a particular focus on family mediation, court-connected ADR, and large-scale mediation programme implementation. Karen holds both a B.Proc and LLB from the University of the Free State and was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1997. She is a NABFAM-accredited family and divorce mediator and holds advanced training in family mediation, divorce mediation, psychology for family mediation, and RAF (Road Accident Fund) mediation. She is also DiSAC-accredited in personal injury and RAF claims mediation. Karen plays a central leadership role in advancing ADR accessibility and standards. She is the Project Director of the ADR Court Project, which integrates mediation into the Children’s Court system in Protea (Soweto) and Johannesburg Central, expanding access to justice for families in high-conflict environments. As Managing Director of ACR Community NPC, she is actively involved in developing community-based mediation initiatives and scalable ADR frameworks. Her leadership in the profession includes serving as an EXCO Member of the Social Justice Association (SJA) of ADR Practitioners (2024–2025), contributing to governance, accreditation standards, and professional development within the mediation sector. Karen’s work has been formally recognised, including receiving an award for Best Mediation Contribution (2024) from ProBono.Org, reflecting her impact on access to justice and the development of mediation in South Africa.

I have been a mediator since 2012 and internationally qualified since 2013. I have been involved in practicing law, one way or another since 1985.

I am an International ATLS Trauma Instructor, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons / FACS and Master of Laparoscopic/ Keyhole Surgery through IRCAD/EITS Strasbourg, France. I obtained a Diploma in Anaesthesia from The College of Medicine South Africa. I am a Bonsmara cattle farmer and, since the year 2000, have been well known in the Bonsmara Cattle Breeders Association. Karmel Bonsmaras previously stemmed from my interest in the cattle Industry. I was a finalist for the Climate Ambassador Farmer of the Year in 2026. I am interested in general surgery and related medico-legal and expert witness work. My experience as a proficient and seasoned general surgeon and traumatologist with more than 22 years in private practice contributes to my expertise. During this period, I acquired numerous additional national and internationally endorsed qualifications. I am compliant with HPCSA requirements and qualified as a mediator through MPA and passed the SAMLA Foundation Course in 2025 with distinction. During my tenure as a surgeon, I rendered additional surgical services in person to numerous rural communities and patients in the Northern Cape, Northwest Province and Greater Karoo. I am committed to exceptional patient and client care. I passed the SAMLA Foundation Course in 2025 Cum Laude. I qualified as a mediator through MPA in 2025.

• Presiding over the first 120 personal injury mediations. 20 RAF matters and 100 matters as part of the PRASA Mediation Pilot Project, achieving a 85% settlement rate. • Took part as observer and advisor in the RAF pilot project. • Managing/advising the mediator panel (and acting as mediator) in a Consumer Commission Project of 150 consumer disputes, resulting in 134 negotiated settlements. • Panel member of the Community Schemes Ombud Services. Appointment in more than 60 Community Schemes Ombud Service disputes, successfully resolving 53 disputes through mediation. • Mediating the Route 6 Taxi Association governance dispute, over 12 months, involving numerous disputes between more than 10 stakeholders, restoring the governance structure and facilitating the successful election of a new executive committee. • Since 2026 he was appointed as mediator in 7 divorce mediations, settling 6.

I practiced as an advocate for 25 years specialising in labour and employment law and have more recently joined Garlicke & Bousfield Inc as an attorney and Director.
